The Legend of Ronnie

Who Is Countess Penelope?

Countess Penelope arrived in Whitby in the autumn of 1890, on a ship whose crew were never seen again. He took up residence across the harbour from the Abbey β€” a sensible arrangement, given that he preferred to sleep during daylight hours and the Abbey had rather too many windows.

Over the centuries he has learned the name of every fisherman, every lifeboat man, every baker who opens at 4am. He knows which chip shop has the best chips. He knows exactly when the tide is due. He is, in many ways, the most Whitby person in Whitby.

He also runs the gift shop. He is very good at it.

Collecting Whitby jet, intimidating tourists with a single raised eyebrow, hosting moonlit soirΓ©es on the cliff.

Favourite Food

"A lady never discusses her diet. But if you must know β€” I have very refined tastes. Very."
